1. Use Vinegar
White vinegar is a wonder, it is a natural alternative cleaner and deodorizer. Simply pour a half cup of distilled white vinegar into your next load instead of your usual detergent.
Vinegar will also help remove the musty smell from those cold weather items that have been stored away all summer. Use 1 cup of distilled white vinegar poured in the bleach dispenser along with your usual detergent.
2. Use Baking Soda
If your Fall fun includes a round of touch football or romping around the pumpkin farm, then you know grass stains are inevitable. Using baking soda mixed with a bit of water rubbed into the stain before washing will help remove the stains.
3. Wash Flannel in Warm Water (and Vinegar!)
Warm water ensures minimal fading of those plaid colors and prevents the shrinkage that can occur with hot water. Hot water also reduces the softness of flannel as flannel leaves behind lint deposits, it is recommended that you wash flannel items separately. Another useful tip is to skip fabric softener when laundering flannel items. Fabric softeners will stiffen fabric fibers over time and reduce that cozy soft feeling.
4. Wash Knits in Cold Water
While handwashing knitwear provides the best results, washing them in the machine with cold water is a time saver. Warm water can cause knit fibers to fray, cold water saves your sweaters. Another useful tip is to set the load for a delicate/gentle cycle and/or permanent press and skip the spin to prevent snags and reduce pilling.
